Never had a problem finding stuff to do in Kyoto (days and evenings packed) The time in Osaka felt about right, we didn't do any side trips (had planned to but Kyoto was too entertaining to leave) If you want big city vibes stay in Osaka, if you want to explore a more historical city with better access to nature then Kyoto is better

Uji is marginally cheaper but pretty much all the well-known brands will have a branch in Kyoto as well If you’re just looking for some souvenir matcha for baking or lattes rather than whisking up yourself a cup, you won’t need to go out of your way for the ceremonial matcha

The buses to and from the further flung temples can all be gotten at Kyoto station Many travelers arrive in Kyoto by train and depart by train and use Kyoto as a base for day trips to Nara and Osaka Staying near Kyoto Station does seem to make the most sense to me

Parking in places like Kyoto is going to be hard to find and expensive I’ve had parking cost ¥6000 for just an overnight spot in a city like Bepu So I can’t even imagine how much it cost in Kyoto Plus I’ve been around Kyoto a lot and can honestly say they just don’t really factor in parking at most places

I would suggest the Cross Hotel Kyoto (different location than the Sakura Cross Hotel suggested in another comment ) It was super close to Pontocho Alley and Kiyamachi-dori We easily walked to Gion several times The Sanyo train station is a 5 minute walk, and it was fairly easy getting to from Kyoto station
